The Chandigarh Union Territory (UT) administration has announced that all sewage treatment plants (STPs) in the city have been upgraded to comply with the latest environmental standards. As part of its initiative to enhance the reuse of treated wastewater, the administration aims to nearly double the utilization from 45 million litres per day (MLD) to 90 MLD by June 30. This increase will be supported by a new 165-km distribution network designed to supply tertiary-treated water to parks, gardens, government offices, and large residential properties. Currently, all STPs are producing tertiary-treated water, which is disinfected using gas chlorination for non-potable applications. The compliance report submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) also highlighted that almost all wastewater generated in Chandigarh is treated, with only a small amount remaining untreated from Faidan village. To address this, a modular STP with a capacity of 750 kilolitres per day (KLD) has been made operational, with another expected to be commissioned by May 30. Additionally, the report noted improvements in solid waste management, with a reduction in mixed waste from 75 to 70 tonnes per day.
