The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to enhance its operational flexibility by integrating air-launched drones and loitering munitions into its arsenal. Recently, the IAF issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for drones that can be deployed from helicopters and a Request for Information (RFI) for loitering munitions to be launched from transport aircraft. This initiative aims to broaden the IAF's offensive capabilities, allowing for precision strikes and reconnaissance tasks, thereby alleviating pressure on its fighter fleet, which is currently facing a shortfall.
The proposed drones are expected to have a range of approximately 500 km, carrying warheads of about 30 kg, and operating at speeds between 350 and 400 km/h. Drones launched from helicopters will have a shorter range of about 80 km and a minimum payload of 500 grams. This shift aligns with global military trends, where nations like the United States, China, and Russia are also focusing on drone swarms and air-launched unmanned systems, reflecting the growing importance of these technologies in modern warfare. The integration of such systems is anticipated to play a central role in shaping future combat strategies.
