In Pune, India, the Mula-Mutha River is facing a severe resurgence of water hyacinth, an invasive weed that has returned just weeks after clean-up drives. Residents from the Bund Garden area report that this issue has led to a dramatic increase in mosquitoes, foul odors, and insect infestations. Mehboobi Sayyed, a local kiosk owner, expressed frustration over the mosquito problem, stating that even burning coils is ineffective. Another resident, Sopan Kamble, noted that the situation worsens during the monsoon season when stagnant patches of water increase, allowing the hyacinth to spread more rapidly. Despite repeated complaints to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), residents feel that temporary clean-up measures are not addressing the root causes of the problem. Kishori Shinde, deputy commissioner of the environment department at PMC, assured that efforts to remove the hyacinth are ongoing. However, local MLA Shiddarth Shirole emphasized that the spread of hyacinth has serious implications for public health, increasing the risk of diseases such as dengue and malaria. Residents are now calling for a permanent solution to this persistent environmental issue.
