Tribal communities in Navsari, Gujarat, have initiated a protest to secure ownership rights over the land they have occupied for generations. Concerns are rising that urban development and road-widening projects may lead to their displacement. Members of the Adivasi Janjagruti Samiti (Tribal Awareness Committee) gathered at the municipal office to present a formal application outlining their demands to the Municipal Commissioner and District Collector. The protest is driven by the lack of formal property rights, which leaves families vulnerable to potential demolitions. The community has articulated four core demands: immediate issuance of property cards, provision of alternative housing before any demolition, permission for residents to build additional floors on partially affected homes, and mandatory consultation with community leaders before implementing any development schemes. Protest leaders have warned of escalating their agitation if the authorities fail to engage with their concerns and demands.
