India is set to enhance its operational capabilities in high-altitude regions with the introduction of the Light Utility Helicopter (LUH), developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL). This helicopter is designed to replace the aging Cheetah and Chetak helicopters that have served critical roles in the Himalayan frontiers, including the Siachen Glacier. The LUH can fly at altitudes up to 21,300 feet and is powered by the HAL–Turbomeca Shakti-1U turboshaft engine. It has a maximum speed of about 235 km/h and can carry six soldiers along with a crew of two. Equipped with a digital glass cockpit and compatibility with night vision devices, the LUH is tailored for various operations, including medical evacuation, troop transport, and reconnaissance. The project received approval in 2009, with prototypes flying since September 2016. A total of 171 helicopters are planned for induction, with initial orders placed by the Indian Air Force and the Army. Deliveries are expected to commence from HAL’s Tumakuru facility in Karnataka, marking a significant step towards self-reliance in defense aviation.
