The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has granted the Shikhar Dhawan Foundation, the charitable organization of former Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan, the ability to receive foreign funding under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA). This approval occurs in the context of a money laundering investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which last year attached assets worth ₹4.5 crore (approximately $540,000 USD) linked to Dhawan and the banned online betting platform 1xBet. The foundation focuses on social welfare initiatives and has been added to the MHA's list of entities authorized to accept foreign contributions. Earlier this month, the MHA also granted FCRA registration to Baba Bageshwar Dham, a religious organization led by Dhirendra Krishna Shastri in Madhya Pradesh. So far this year, 38 NGOs have received such approvals, indicating a steady processing of applications despite increased scrutiny. The MHA conducts thorough inquiries into applicants' backgrounds through the Intelligence Bureau before granting FCRA registrations. Additionally, a new Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha, proposing the establishment of a designated authority to manage the assets of non-profits that lose their licenses.
