The Opposition in India is set to write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding the implementation of the original Women's Reservation Bill following the failure of the Constitution Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha. During a recent meeting, leaders from the INDIA bloc expressed their support for women's reservation but criticized the government's approach, alleging it is attempting to alter the political landscape under the guise of women's empowerment. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi emphasized the need to bring back the previously agreed-upon version of the bill, challenging the government to act swiftly. The One Hundred and Sixth Constitutional Amendment Act, passed in 2023, provides for 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. However, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government could not secure the necessary two-thirds majority to pass the recent amendment linked to delimitation, resulting in its defeat with 298 votes in favor and 230 against. The Lok Sabha Speaker confirmed the failure, and the government has shelved further related legislation. Union Home Minister Amit Shah accused the opposition of obstructing crucial reforms, while opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, reiterated their support for women's reservation but opposed its connection to delimitation.
