A recent investigation by the Madhya Pradesh health department has exposed critical lapses in blood transfusion safety at the Vallabhbhai Patel District Hospital in Satna, where five children with thalassemia tested HIV-positive. The probe revealed that expired blood was used, and proper records of blood donors were not maintained. Additionally, blood was not adequately tested for HIV and other infections before transfusion. Between January 2024 and March 2025, out of 204 blood units issued to the infected children, only 17% were tested with the more sensitive CLIA method, while the rest were tested using the less reliable Rapid Card method. The investigation also highlighted issues at the Birla Blood Centre, which allegedly issued expired blood units and failed to refer HIV-reactive donors to appropriate care centers. The findings have prompted multiple authorities to take action to ensure accountability and improve the safety of blood transfusions in the region.
