In light of a nearly 50% decline in study permits issued to Indian students in 2025, Canada is implementing significant changes to attract postgraduate candidates starting in 2026. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has launched a campaign titled “Get your graduate degree in Canada,” which includes key benefits such as simpler processing for graduate applicants, a two-week processing timeline for PhD visas, and the ability for spouses and children to accompany students. Notably, students enrolling in master's and doctoral programs at designated public universities will be exempt from the national study-permit cap and will not need to submit a Provincial Attestation Letter. This initiative follows a drop in study permits from approximately 188,715 in 2024 to around 94,605 in 2025, alongside increased rejection rates due to stricter financial checks. To further strengthen ties, Canada has signed 13 new partnerships with Indian universities, promoting joint degrees and research collaborations in fields like artificial intelligence and clean energy. The new measures aim to create smoother pathways for Indian students, enhancing their opportunities for work and permanent residency in Canada.
