The Delhi government is taking significant steps to enhance the survival rates of transplanted trees by empaneling agencies that utilize advanced machinery. An Expression of Interest (EoI) has been issued, requiring agencies to possess specialized tree transplantation machines capable of handling trees with a girth of 150cm or more. Additionally, agencies must employ certified arborists and trained machine operators. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa highlighted that previous attempts at tree transplantation have resulted in a low survival rate of only 33.33%, with many agencies using inadequate equipment. The forest department can impose penalties of up to βΉ57,000 (approximately $685 USD) per tree for non-compliance with transplantation guidelines. Furthermore, a study by the Forest Research Institute in Dehradun will investigate the reasons for low survival rates and recommend improvements to the Tree Transplantation Policy 2020. Recent reports indicate that nearly 43% of trees transplanted for the Central Vista redevelopment project did not survive, underscoring the urgency of addressing these issues.
