The Indian government has officially notified the establishment of the country's first chip fabrication plant, a special economic zone (SEZ) to be developed by Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing Private Limited in Dholera, Gujarat. This ambitious project will involve an investment of ₹91,000 crore (approximately $11 billion USD) and will span 66.166 hectares of land. It is projected to generate 21,000 jobs, significantly contributing to the local economy and the semiconductor industry. The SEZ is designed to support electronic hardware, software, and IT-enabled services, featuring necessary infrastructure and a dedicated approval mechanism to streamline operations. This approval comes after the government amended SEZ rules in June 2025, reducing the minimum land requirement for semiconductor projects, thereby facilitating easier establishment of such facilities. In addition to Tata's project, four other semiconductor and electronics component SEZ proposals have also been approved, including investments from Micron Semiconductor Technology India Ltd and Aequs Group, which aim to enhance domestic value chains and reduce import dependence.
