The Thiruporur assembly constituency, located on the outskirts of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, is gearing up for a closely contested election, primarily between the VCK (Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi) and PMK (Pattali Makkal Katchi) parties. Historically, elections here have been decided by narrow margins, influenced by the near-equal population of dalits and vanniyars. The electorate has grown from 2.5 lakh in 2016 to 2.8 lakh in 2026, indicating increased voter engagement. Candidates are focusing on high-rise and gated communities along the Old Mamallapuram Road (OMR), which has developed into an IT corridor. Former VCK MLA S S Balaji noted that residents' welfare associations will be pivotal in determining the outcome. This election sees VCK fielding a Dalit candidate, Panneerdas, while PMK has historically won with a Dalit candidate as well. Infrastructure issues, particularly bus connectivity, are being raised by voters in PMK strongholds, highlighting a disconnect between elected representatives and community needs. Additionally, the rise of the TVK (Thamizhaga Vivasayigal Katchi) party could disrupt traditional voting patterns, as some voters express dissatisfaction with the ongoing caste rivalry.
